Being disciples – Rowan Williams

12 September, 2016

Now 9780281076628available at Shoemakers, the brand new title from Rowan Williams, Being Disciples (Essentials of the Christian Life). The book has a very simple aim: to help you see more clearly, love more dearly and follow more nearly the way of Jesus Christ.

“‘Being disciples’ means at least two things. It means very simply going on  asking whether what we do, how we think and speak and act, is open to Christ and Christ’s Spirit; developing the skills of asking ourselves the difficult questions about our consistency and honesty, about how seriously we take what we say. And it is also about how we as a church go on being a learning community, how we grow in depth of relationship with each other and God.”

New book from David Winter – Book launch

21 July, 2016

9780857464767The latest book from local author David Winter hits the bookshelves this Friday, 22 July. The Bible – especially the New Testament – has plenty to say about resurrection and heaven, but many Christians struggle to make sense of what it actually means in practice. This accessible book explores the biblical teaching on what happens after death and considers what difference this can make to our lives day by day. The author also shows how we can present what we believe about eternity as a source of hope to our sceptical, anxious world.

We are delighted to say that David will be holding a book launch next Thursday, 28 July at 7:30 at St Nicolas church.   This will be a great opportunity to hear about the book from the author himself, as well as buying yourself a signed copy!  We will be there, selling books and providing the refreshments, so it will also be a chance to taste our new coffee (if you haven’t already!)

We look forward to seeing you at what promises to be a great evening!

God in public

10 June, 2016

What has Christianity to do with power?
Why must the church remind those in authority of their responsibilities?
What can Christians do to act as the voice of the voiceless?
How can speaking of God in public help to create new structures of international justice and peace?

This new book from Tom Wright is a fascinating insight into how and why Christians should engage in the principalities and powers at play in the world today.  It’s starting point is “How can we work out what God wants us to do in response to the burning issues facing the world today?”

By addressing key questions, this book demonstrates the many ways in which scripture can throw fresh light – God’s light – on the great philosophical and ethical problems of our day.

Lent resources from Shoemakers

23 January, 2016

Lent is traditionally a time when people slow down and contemplate using Lent courses or devotional material. This year, as always, there are some greate resources to help.

Fleeting Shadows –  How Christ transforms the darkness

Join Malcolm Duncan as he draws from his own personal life and experiences to help us reflect on the cross and the power of Christ in our own lives as we walk through the trials and tribulations of life.

The leaders guide at the back will help small groups get the maximum benefit from these incisive studies.

The Mystery of Everything takes the multi-award winning film about Stephen Hawking, The Theory of Everything, as its starting point. The course  explores ways in which the mysteries of the universe and of everyday life – and the acceptance that we have more questions than answers – can reinvigorate our faith and spiritual journey.

Each session includes an extract from the film, group discussion questions and a meditation. There are also short introductory and follow up chapters for individual reading each week, and a chapter of Bible passages for further daily reading. The book supplies full notes for group course leaders.

And of course, we have many other courses available – pop in to Shoemakers to see our whole range

Dust and 9780857463579-lGlory – David Runcorn

The path from Ash Wednesday to Easter day is one in which our frail humanity is met by God’s immense love and grace. Questions continually rise within us and this book invites us to discover more of Self and God as we seek to live authentic lives as followers of Christ.

Abraham – Meg Warner

Everyone knows that Abraham is one of the most important characters in the Bible, but why should a man who lived nearly 4,000 years ago still matter to Christians today? Each chapter is followed by a set of questions arising from it, as well as suggested further reading. In each chapter the reader is offered an interpretation of the chosen passage that is fresh and designed to resonate with their own personal experience. The book gently challenges some traditional ideas about Abraham and his presentation in the Bible.

Sensiupload_35021-210x322ng God – Laurence Freeman
‘Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it’ (Matthew 16.25). We often associate Lent with ‘giving something up’, but it is also a good time to begin, or to deepen the practice of meditation. Through this ascetic discipline, we enter into the tradition of the Desert Fathers, and as we learn to sense God’s presence and nurture the silence within, come to experience joy and well-being in every area of our lives.
9781848256781Word in the wilderness – Malcolm Guite

For every day from Shrove Tuesday to Easter Day, the bestselling poet Malcolm Guite chooses a favourite poem from across the Christian spiritual and English literary traditions and offers incisive seasonal reflections on it. Lent is a time to reorient ourselves, clarify our minds, slow down, recover from distraction and focus on the values of God’s kingdom. Poetry, with its power to awaken the mind, is an ideal companion for such a time.

And, as with the Lent courses, a much fuller range can be found in store.
